The Spanish language has a fascinating history
Language always goes hand in hand with its history. In the case of the Spanish language, this can be seen very vividly at present: in the language itself and in where it is spoken.
Latin and Arabic roots
The Spanish language is a Romanic language, which means that its origins lie in Latin - historically, in Roman Hispania.
After the demise of the Roman Empire, during the 700-year reign of the Moors on the Iberian Peninsula, the Spanish language took an intriguing turn and assimilated a great deal of the Arabic vocabulary, such as
- alféizar ("windowsill")
- azúcar ("sugar") or
- ojalá ("hopefully").
By the way, compared to German, Spanish has many more verbs, which makes it, one might argue, like its people - dynamic and temperamental.
Arrival of the Spanish in the Americas
In 1492, Spain became a colonial power with the "discovery" of the Americas by Christopher Columbus which, in turn, introduced the Spanish language to Central and South America.
Today, Spanish is the official language or second language in
- Argentina
- Bolivia
- Chile
- Colombia
- Costa Rica
- Cuba
- the Dominican Republic
- Ecuador
- El Salvador
- Guatemala
- Honduras
- Mexico
- Nicaragua
- Panama
- Paraguay
- Peru
- Puerto Rico
- Uruguay
- Venezuela
- and, of course, Spain.
A great example of Spanish culture can be found in the vast cultural and regional diversity between Mexico and its All Saints Festival, in which the reunion with the dead is celebrated with a huge festival. Whether it's celebrating Día de los Muertos in Mexico, enjoying the charms of bygone times in Cuba, or discovering the ruins of Machu Picchu in Peru:
Let yourself be seduced by Spain and Hispanic America.
You will not regret it!
