German as a foreign language: Overview of German language levels and courses!

If you would like to attend a German course at our language school in Leipzig, the first thing you will ask yourself is: Which German course is actually the right one for me?

Subsequently, you will be confronted with different levels:

• A1 and A2
• B1 and B2
• C1 and C2

 

But what do these designations mean, and where do they come from?

The levels for your German course come from the so-called Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). In the CEFR, every major European language test is divided into 6 levels of difficulty.

Here is an explanation of what is behind the letters:

• A: elementary language use
• B: independent use of language
• C1: competent use of language
• C2: (almost) native language use

 

But how do you know what level you are at and, consequently, which language course is right for you? That's what our placement test is for! This will show you which level you should start at.

At language levels A1 and A2, you will be able to:

• describe straightforward processes

 

After passing the exam, you will be able to communicate in German in many everyday situations. You will be proficient in basic German grammar and vocabulary.

B1 & B2 German courses in Leipzig: Intermediate language use

At the B1 and B2 levels, our focus is on training you to use the language independently.

At these levels, you will be able to:

• follow conversations on many topics and actively participate in the conversation without any serious struggling
• understand more complex German texts.

 

If you have successfully passed your language exam at this level, you are familiar with reading, writing and conversing about complex topics.

C1 & C2 German courses in Leipzig: German for experts

The final language levels, C1 and C2, are the highest you can reach, with the emphasis being on total fluency in the German language.

At C1 and C2 levels, you can:

• communicate clearly and concisely on a variety of topics
• express yourself spontaneously and fluently when responding to questions
• understand almost any text (including particularly complicated or unfamiliar ones)
• deal confidently with scientific, political, cultural and other sensitive topics.

 

You speak German nearly as well as a native speaker and have no language limitations in your job.
