What do I need a telc B1 exam for?

This exam is suitable for all learners of German who already have a basic knowledge of the German language. Specifically, you need telc Deutsch B1 / Zertifikat Deutsch, for example, as proof of sufficient language skills for naturalization in Germany.

In addition, the telc B1 exam is a good start for those who want to begin a course of study or training in Germany. In this case, too, you will need officially recognized proof of your German language skills in most cases.

At many universities, for example, the telc C1 certificate is considered an admission requirement for many German-language degree programs, but also for some English-language fields of study.

With the B1 certificate, you are well on your way to meeting the admission requirements.

How is the telc B1 examination structured?

The telc B1 examination consists of two parts:

  • the written examination (2.5 hours)
  • the oral exam (15 minutes)

The exam is usually held on two consecutive days and rarely on one.

Note: You will receive all the necessary information about this and other important details in good time before the exam by e-mail.

Structure of the written exam

The telc B1 written examination takes a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes. It consists of the following components:

  • Reading comprehension (vocabulary and grammar): 90 minutes
  • Written expression: 30 minutes
  • Listening comprehension: 30 minutes

Structure of the oral exam

In contrast to the A1 and A2 levels, you will be given 20 minutes preparation time for the oral part of the B1 telc examination.

The examination itself lasts 15 minutes and in most cases takes the form of a conversation with another candidate. If the number of examinees is an odd number, the oral B1 telc exam will take place as a conversation with one of the two examiners.

Do you have any questions about the telc examination procedure or would you like more information?

When have I passed the telc B1 examination?

You have passed the exam if you have answered at least 60% of the questions correctly in both the oral and written sections. In terms of total points, this means that you must score at least 45 points orally and no less than 135 points in writing (180 points in total).

Can I retake the telc B1 exam?

Yes, this is possible. In contrast to the A1 and A2 levels, you do not have to repeat the entire exam. If, for example, you have only failed the written or oral part, you can retake the respective part individually. The deadline for this is the end of the next calendar year.

There is no limit to the number of examination attempts!

How long does it take to receive my certificate?

If you are not in Leipzig or cannot pick up your certificate in person at our language school for any other reason, we will be happy to send it to you by mail.

Important: In order to have the certificate picked up by another person, it is not sufficient to inform us by e-mail or phone. You must issue a power of attorney in order for the certificate to be picked up. This also applies if you would like to receive the certificate by mail.
